As with any surgical treatment, there is a risk of postoperative complications, including infections and dry eyes. At Byrd Eye Clinic, serving Detroit, MI, Dearborn Heights, MI, Lincoln Park, MI, and surrounding areas, Dr. Thomas J. Byrd provides patients with eye drops after LASIK to help reduce these risks and foster a comfortable, successful recovery.

Using eye drops after LASIK can help soothe post-surgical side effects and alleviate any discomfort associated with the healing process. Here, we discuss the types of postoperative eye drops you will use.

What Types of Eye Drops Should I Use?

Following LASIK, Dr. Byrd will provide you with two types of prescription eye drops: antibiotic and steroid. The antibiotic drops help reduce the risk of eye infections, while the steroid drops help control inflammation. You will be given specific instructions for use. It is important to follow the guidelines set by Dr. Byrd.

Dry Eyes after LASIK

One of the most common side effects after LASIK is dry eye. This is to be expected due to the nature of the procedure. As the cornea is being reshaped by the laser, the nerves responsible for tear production are often severed. They will heal over time. However, immediately following LASIK, many individuals develop dry eyes because of this.

Lubricating Eye Drops for Dry Eye

Since dry eye is a common occurrence after LASIK, our team encourages patients to use lubricating eye drops during the healing period. While any over-the-counter formula can be used, we recommend liquid tears, as they do not contain preservatives or chemicals that could result in irritation. Liquid tears help alleviate redness and itchiness, and they can be used for several months after LASIK if necessary.

What if I Have a History of Dry Eye?

It is important to note that patients with pre-existing dry eyes are not typically candidates for LASIK, as there is a chance it could make the condition worse. If you have a history of dry eye syndrome, talk to Dr. Byrd about non-surgical treatment options. He can help design a custom plan for you.

How Often Do I Need to Use Eye Drops after LASIK?

The answer to this question can vary, because it significantly depends on the individual healing process. In most cases, however, patients can expect to use eye drops for several weeks to a few months after LASIK. Sometimes liquid tears may be necessary for longer. During a consultation at our practice, we can discuss the risks and benefits of treatment so you can make an informed decision.

Other Considerations for Dry Eye Management

In addition to using lubricating eye drops, there are a few other things you can do to reduce dry eye symptoms following LASIK. For example:

  • Avoid being in smoky, dusty, or dry environments.

  • Be cognizant of any allergens in the air and take proper precautions.
  • Always wear eye protection to shield your eyes from irritants.
